A TOTAL of 996 people were hospitalised with Covid-19 yesterday, up from 948 the day before, the Health Ministry said.

The hospital utilisation rate stood at 65.8%, of which 28.2% were due to the coronavirus.

The number of hospital admissions indicates the severity of the virus. Hospital utilisation includes bed usage as well as the number of patients in intensive care units and on ventilators

There were 322 admissions in the Klang Valley, which had a hospital utilisation rate of 59.6%.

Selangor reported 279 admissions, Kuala Lumpur (25) and Putrajaya (18).

Other states that reported new admissions were Johor with 433, Kedah (48), Kelantan (95), Malacca (10), Negri Sembilan (50), Pahang (22), Perak (36), Perlis (10), Penang (13), Sabah (91), Sarawak (67), Terengganu (14) and Labuan (1).

Meanwhile, 3,997 new infections were reported yesterday.

In the Klang Valley, Selangor logged 965 cases, Kuala Lumpur 241 and Putrajaya 25.

Other states that reported cases are Johor (433), Kedah (328), Kelantan (425), Malacca (239), Negri Sembilan (161), Pahang (254), Perak (209), Perlis (7), Penang (207), Sabah (225), Sarawak (24), Terengganu (243) and Labuan (10).

Active cases totalled 49,967 – 42,828 (85.7%) were in home quarantine, 3,326 (6.7%) in quarantine centres and 3,532 (7.1%) in hospital.

There were 281 people in intensive care units, 155 of them on ventilators. –  December 31, 2021.
