A GROUP of mechanics from Kluang, Johor, who repaired more than 100 motorcycles for flood victims in Taman Sri Nanding in Hulu Langat, Selangor, last month, are planning to do the same in Banting this week.

The group of 25 travelled to Taman Sri Nanding at the end of last month and provided service to the owners of motorcycles that were damaged in the flood.

They will be in Banting to help flood victims repair their motorbikes from Wednesday.

Group leader Anuar Salikan, 35, who is the owner of Syahmi Racing Kluang, said the idea of helping the flood victims was mooted by a friend.

“We have no other skills to contribute but motorcycle repairs. So we decided to do it for free as the motorbike may be the only means of transport for many of the flood victims,” Anuar told The Malaysian Insight.

“This will help them save their money from having to send their machines to a workshop.”

Anuar and his team were in Taman Sri Nanding from December 29-31. Over the course of three days, they repaired more than 100 motorcycles.

“One of the mechanics has a cousin in Taman Sri Nanding, so he helped show us around,” said Anuar.

“To make it easier for the flood victims to access our service, we took up a space at a mosque. The residents’ group was then informed that we were there to repair motorcycles for free.”

Services provided by the group included oil change and changing of spark plugs and carburettors.

Anuar said if the motorcycles were sent to a workshop, the owners would have to fork out at least RM200 for repairs.

“Since most of us who went to help own workshops, we pooled the spare parts needed for the repairs. All in all, the parts cost more than RM10,000,” he said, adding that they also paid for the cost of travel and accommodation out of their own pockets.

On Wednesday, Anuar and a bigger group of mechanics will be travelling to Banting to help the flood victims there.

“This time, there will be about 30 of us. Most of us own workshops while others are mechanics who will be taking leave,” he said.

Anuar said the group hopes to repair more than 200 motorcycles this time.

Continuous heavy rain on December 18 and 19 saw large parts of the Klang Valley submerged in water.

Taman Sri Nanding was one of the most badly affected areas with water levels rising to the roof. Several families have had their houses washed away by strong currents. – January 10, 2022.
