POLICE will summon those involved in the #TangkapAzamBaki protest yesterday to facilitate investigation.

This includes activists, politicians, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the public, said Brickfields police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor.

He added that an investigation is opened under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases 1988 (Act 342).

“Yes, the investigating officer will take action according to standard operating procedures.”

Amihizam in a statement earlier said police will conduct further investigation into the rally held at the Bangsar LRT station yesterday.

“Demonstrators disobeyed the order, which prohibited any assembly from being held in the capital.

“We also found that several parliamentarians, state assemblymen, politicians, NGOs and the public participated in the protest.”

About 50 rally-goers wearing black shirts gathered at the station from 10.45am, he added.

“At 11.45 am, the number of participants was at 400 people.

“They marched carrying banners down Jalan Travers all the way to the traffic light junction in Brickfields.

“There was a 30-minute speech before participants returned to Bangsar LRT station and dispersed in stages.”

Amihizam said all parties were asked to comply with the law and follow the proper channels, especially in voicing opinions.

Action will be taken against any party found to be organising or participating in any gathering without valid approval, he added.

The rally, organised by civil society groups and political organisations, is made illegal after cops obtained a court order banning gatherings at the shopping mall, Dataran Merdeka and Masjid Jamek.

Police also shut several roads in the capital yesterday, to prevent the rally from taking place at its intended location in front of Sogo Kuala Lumpur.

Organisers then changed the venue to the Bangsar LRT station, but police shut the area and roads surrounding it after learning about the development.

The rally started at 11am and ended at 12.45pm.

The #TangkapAzamBaki movement is supported by 33 civil society groups and 11 political organisations.

The rally is held to demand the arrest of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Azam Baki, following his alleged purchase of millions of shares in 2015 and 2016. – January 23, 2022.
