New Covid cases breach 11,000 for first time in 4 months

MALAYSIA recorded 11,034 fresh Covid-19 infections today, said Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The last time the country logged more than 11,000 cases was on October 1, when 11,889 cases were registered.

Malaysia has been witnessing a surge in infections over the past week, of which the majority are Omicron infections.

Dr Noor Hisham said the new cases today bring the total number of reported cases to 2.92 million.

The national infection rate (R-naught) has also reached a new high at 1.27, with the majority of states recording an R-naught higher than 1.20.

Health Ministry Khairy Jamaluddin yesterday said daily coronavirus cases are expected to breach the 15,000-mark soon, as the country “fully” enters an Omicron wave.

The minister also urged the public to get their boosters.

A total of 12.3 million (52.8%) adults have been vaccine-boosted as of yesterday.

A total of 22.9 million (97.9%) adults have completed their vaccination, while 23.2 million (99.2%) have received at least one vaccine dose.

As for adolescents aged 12 to 17, 2.79 million (88.7%) of the group have completed their vaccination, while 2.87 million (91.2%) have received at least one vaccine dose.

Yesterday, 69,601 vaccine doses were dispensed, of which 16,325 are first doses, 759 second doses and 52,517 boosters. – February 7, 2022.
