MALAYSIA continued to report more than 10,000 Covid-19 infections for a third day in a row, logging 13,944 at noon today, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham said.

The last time the country breached 13,000 infections was on September 26 when 13,104 cases were registered.

Noor Hisham said the fresh cases today raised the tally to 2.93 million nationwide.

Yesterday, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin assured the public that the Covid situation in the country was under control as cases continued to spike.

This, he said, was because the majority of the cases carrying the Omicron variant were mostly in non-severe categories.

He assured that despite the surge, hospitals are not overwhelmed and are able accommodate Covid cases.

The infection rate also jumped from 1.27 yesterday to 1.32 today, with the majority of states recording an R-naught higher than 1.20.

Sabah and Perlis currently have the highest infection rate of 1.54.

Meanwhile, based on the CovidNow portal, a total of 22.93 million individuals or 98% of the country’s adult population have completed the vaccination, while 23.21 million individuals or 99.2% have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

For adolescents aged between 12 and 17, a total of 2.79 million or 88.7% of their population have completed the vaccination, while 2.87 million individuals or 91.2% have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

A total of 119,543 doses of the vaccine were dispensed yesterday, with 9,321 of them as first dose, 2,188 second doses and 108,034 booster doses. – February 8, 2022.
