MALAYSIA’S daily Covid-19 infections rose to 17,134 this afternoon, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, marking the fourth day the country has logged more than 10,000 cases.

The fresh cases today bring the cumulative infection toll to 2.95 million.

The last time the country recorded 17,000 was on September 6, when 17,352 cases were logged.

Noor Hisham said 17,048 of today’s cases were mild, in categories 1 & 2, while only 86 cases were in more severe categories such as category 3 (symptomatic and pneumonia), category 4 (requiring oxygen) and category 5 (critically ill).

The current Covid-19 wave is being brought about by the Omicron variant, which experts say is the most infectious variant to date.

The country’s infection rate (R0) also rose from 1.32 yesterday to 1.39, with majority of the states reporting higher than R1.3 infection rate.

Currently, Sarawak has the highest infection rate of 1.68.

Meanwhile, the CovidNow portal showed more than 22.9 million adults, or 98% of the population age 21 or older have completed their vaccination, while 23.2 million, or 99.2%, have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Among minors aged between 12 and 17, more than 2.79 people, or 88.7%, have completed their vaccination while 2.87 million people, 91.2%, have received at least a dose of the vaccine.

A total of 152,358 doses of the vaccine have been dispensed, bringing the number of doses administered under the national vaccination campaign to 64.26 million. – February 9, 2022.
