Active Covid-19 caseload continues upward trend

THE number of active Covid-19 cases in Malaysia has grown to 168,447, the Health Ministry reported.

Yesterday, there were 21,315 infections against 8,517 recoveries, while 24 new deaths were also reported.

Of the new cases, 21,228 were in the less severe categories of 1 and 2.

For active cases, 155,866 were in home quarantine, 5,963 in quarantine centres and 6,419 in hospital.

Meanwhile, 1,829 people were admitted to hospitals yesterday, bringing the Covid-19 occupancy rate to 58.6%. The overall usage rate was 66.1%.

Ventilator utilisation by Covid-19 patients was at 36.8%, while intensive care unit occupancy was at 56.2% overall, of which 23.6% were taken up by coronavirus cases.

There were 368 new admissions in Johor, followed by 335 in Sabah and 317 in Selangor.

The hospital admission rate indicates the severity of the virus’s spread. Hospital utilisation includes bed occupancy as well as the number of patients in ICU and on ventilators.

Meanwhile, 5,089 cases were reported in the Klang Valley region, comprising Selangor (3,955), Kuala Lumpur (1,010), and Putrajaya (124).

Sabah reported 4,035 cases, followed by Johor, which is scheduled to go to the polls on March 12, with 2,800 cases.

Other states and territories reporting new cases are Kedah (2,733), Penang (1,656), Kelantan (1,330), Pahang (938), Negri Sembilan (707), Malacca (666), Perak (461, Terengganu (376), Sarawak (206), Labuan (189) and Perlis (129).

Of the 24 fatalities reported, 11 were classified dead on arrival (DOA), bringing the death toll to 32,149.

Sabah and Johor reported five fatalities each, followed by Selangor (4), Kedah (3), Negri Sembilan and Terengganu (2), and Perak (1).

The virus mortality rate was at 0.2%, while the two-week average for virus deaths stood at 46 per 10 million people. – February 15, 2022.
