27,179 new Covid cases, 43 deaths

MALAYSIA logged 27,179 new Covid-19 infections yesterday, bringing the cumulative total to 3,273,958, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

The country has registered more than 20,000 daily cases for the past 11 days, and during this period, a record-high daily infections of 28,825 was reported on February 19.

There were also 43 deaths linked to the coronavirus yesterday. Of the figure, 20 were classified as dead on arrival (DOA).

The latest fatalities bring the Covid-19 death toll to 32,433.

Noor Hisham said that of the new infections, 27,007 cases were in the less severe categories of 1 and 2 while 172 cases were the more serious categories of 3, 4 and 5.

The bulk of the new cases was in category 2.

The breakdown of the new cases by categories is as follows:

Category 1: 7,792 cases (28.67%);

Category 2: 19,215 cases (70.7%);

Category 3: 102 cases (0.37%);

Category 4: 43 cases (0.16%); and

Category 5: 27 cases (0.1%).

Of the new infections reported, Selangor logged the highest number of cases by any state or territory, at 5,568, followed by Sabah (4,406) and Penang (2,601).

Other states and territories reporting new cases are Kedah (2,583), Kelantan (2,043), Malacca (611), Negri Sembilan (1,157), Pahang (1,668), Perak (1,025), Perlis (299), Johor (2,200), Sarawak (441), Terengganu (782), Kuala Lumpur (1,355), Labuan (277) and Putrajaya (163).

Meanwhile, of the new cases, 1,520 people were admitted to hospital yesterday.

A total of 195 admissions were in category 1, category 2 (780), category 3 (193), category 4 (323) and category 5 (29).

Sabah recorded the highest daily admissions, at 190.

Although Selangor recorded the highest number of new infections, there were only 166 hospital admissions linked to the coronavirus.

Covid-19 hospital admissions were also recorded in Perlis (32), Kedah (103), Penang (98), Perak (178), Kuala Lumpur (90), Putrajaya (21), Negri Sembilan (105), Malacca (31), Johor (181), Pahang (114), Terengganu (56), Kelantan (116), Sarawak (33) and Labuan (6).

As for intensive care unit utilisation related to Covid-19, Noor Hisham said four states/territories have breached the 50% mark.

They are Kelantan (78%), Johor (69%), Kuala Lumpur (62%) and Malacca (54%).

Active cases are at 267,084. Of them, 254,520 (95.3%) are in home quarantine, 4,704 (1.8%) in quarantine centres and 7,574 (2.8%) in hospital.

Of the 43 Covid-19 deaths, 12 were in Sabah, Johor (9), Negri Sembilan (4), Selangor (4), Kedah (3), Kelantan (3), Penang (3), Malacca (2), Perak (2) and Kuala Lumpur (1). – February 23, 2022.
