KL opens flood relief centre as thunderstorms loom

THE Meteorological Department has issued a thunderstorm warning in various states, while the capital city preps for a possible flood evacuation.

The states are Kedah, Perak, Penang, Pahang, Putrajaya, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Johor and Sabah.

Kudat, Tawau, Sandakan and Pantai Barat, Sabah, will all be affected.

The warning will last until 10pm.

A heavy downpour earlier today caused flash floods in several parts of the capital city.

Early reports said Jalan Kuchai Lama is badly affected, with several roads cut off by rising water. Jalan Pinang is also flooded.

Among affected areas are the Tabung Haji tunnel, Jalan Chan Sow Lin tunnel, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Pahang, Jalan Sri Permaisuri and Jalan Tun Razak.

As of 4.45pm, the water level in the city has been categorised as dangerous.

A National Disaster Management Agency official confirmed with The Malaysian Insight that a temporary relief centre has been opened in Kuala Lumpur. It is located at the Sultan Sulaiman Club hall.

“Authorities are currently assisting the people to evacuate their homes to the centre,” said the official. – March 7, 2022.
