More than RM1.6 billion losses from online fraud

FINANCIAL losses of more than RM1.6 billion from 51,631 online crime cases were recorded between 2019 and 2021, Deputy Home Minister II Jonathan Yasin said in Parliament today. 

He said that cases involving online purchases recorded the highest number at 18,857 cases, followed by non-existent loans with 15,546 cases. 

“Malaysian police have carried out various efforts to combat this fraud syndicate. 

“This includes increasing law enforcement, arrest operations and subsequently prosecuting those involved in fraud,” he said during the question and answer session in Parliament today. 

Jonathan was responding to Su Keong Siong (Kampar-PH), who asked the home minister to state in detail the statistics of online purchase fraud cases from 2019 to 2021.

On steps taken to address the problem, Jonathan said from 2019 to 2021 a total of 26,359 arrests have been made and 16,029 charges made in court. 

Among other measures taken and planned by the police department is to conduct regular talks, briefings and dialogue sessions for government employees, the private sector and civil society groups. 

“The sessions are conducted online, through Facebook, television and radio. A hotline is also provided – 03-2610 1559 or 03-2610 1599.

“People can call for information and check the validity of the call for any dubious transactions,” he said. – March 14, 2022.
