PUTRAJAYA is considering charging vehicles entering the capital city a congestion fee once the public transport network system is completed in 2030, said Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong.

He said such a fee is already implemented in other big cities worldwide, with the exception for electric vehicles.

“The proposal will be considered once the Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3) is completed.

“When we have an entire public transport network system, then it is time to look at this particular component.

“This is the correct trend not only for entering vehicles, but also in terms of environmental protection.”

Wee was responding to a supplementary question by Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai-PH) on whether Putrajaya plans to enforce a congestion fee in Kuala Lumpur once the MRT3 project is completed.

The project, which was approved by cabinet on March 4, is set to be completed by 2030, with Phase 1 being opened to public as early as December 2028.

Wee said the project will be funded in three ways – sukuk, government guarantees and deferred payments.

The MRT3 line will be 51km-long, of which 39km are within the capital city and the remaining 12km in Selangor, according to a technical feasibility study.

Wee said to build 10 new interchange stations, the route will cut through existing rail systems, including MRT1, MRT2, LRT, KL Monorail and KTM.

He said 80% of the new line will be elevated and 20% will be underground. – March 15, 2022.
