UMNO would not have done so well in the Malacca and Johor elections if not for its ministers, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said.

“If our ministers didn’t perform, the party wouldn’t have done so well, because the party’s performance in state elections is reflective of the ministers’ performance in the government,” he told reporters at the 2021 Umno General Assembly in the World Trade Centre today.

Previously, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that although Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is from the party, there were many policies he had not pushed.

Zahid said that important cabinet positions had not been made available to Umno MPs and insisted Ismail “tighten the screws”.

Hishammuddin said it involved him but was not sure of the implication.

“If I am alleged to have underperformed, what didn’t I do and how am I any different from the previous defence ministers? This includes Zahid and former president Najib Razak.

“It’s an allegation that should not be thrown,” said Hishammuddin. – March 18, 2022.
