HANNAH Yeoh is puzzled over criticism of her autobiography “Becoming Hannah”, saying today then PAS lawmaker Saari Sungib had endorsed the book launch in 2014 without raising any questions.
The Selangor State Assembly speaker has been criticised by a university lecturer who said the autobiography was meant to proselytise Muslims, drawing wide support from PAS and Malay groups.
“Back then, Saari Sungib was still with PAS, he did not have any qualms about my book, so why is it a problem now?,” Yeoh said at the “Becoming Hannah” book discussion at the Kuala Kubu Historical Gallery tonight.
The book drew controversy when Universiti Utara Malaysia senior lecturer Kamarul Yusoff posted on Facebook saying the book aimed to prosthelytize Muslims.
Yusoff had also lodged a police report against Yeoh in Kedah to counter Yeoh’s police report against his May 10 Facebook post.
The Subang Jaya assemblyman said she is currently waiting for police to call her up for her statement.
“The support has been overwhelming! Currently I’m still waiting for the police to call me up and it being an investigation, I think it is wise to let the police do their investigation,” she said.
DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang attended the book discussion and remarked that the book did not influence him to convert to Christianity.
“The election is near, that is why this kind of thing is suddenly highlighted,” he said.
National author A. Samad Said, who was there, said people should look further than the issue of religion and learn how to live with one another. – May 27, 2017.
