MALAYSIA reported a dip in Covid-19 infections yesterday, logging 2,799 cases as opposed to 3,589 the previous day.

However, the CovidNow website showed that the number of fatalities increased, reporting eight deaths. 

The new figures bring the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 4.59 million, with 35,809 virus fatalities.

Active cases now stand at 35,323.

Selangor logged the highest number of infections with 910, followed by Kuala Lumpur (668) and Perak (245).

Negri Sembilan reported 196 cases, Sabah (192), Malacca (93), Johor (80), Putrajaya (80), Kedah (58), Sarawak (46), Kelantan (17), Terengganu (9), Labuan (9) and Perlis (8).

Three deaths were reported in Selangor, two in Malacca while Kedah, Sabah and Perak reported one death each.

There are currently 1,156 Covid-19 hospitalisations with 15 people in the intensive care unit, while 26 are on ventilators.

Yesterday, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said two sub-variants of Omicron, BA.5 and BA.2.12.1, have been detected in the country.

He added that both were categorised by the World Health Organization as variants of concern. Both are thought to be more transmissible. – July 10, 2022.
