THE majority of Umno division heads who attended an emergency meeting at the party’s headquarters this morning agreed to urge the prime minister to call for the next general election as soon as possible.

Umno Sungai Besar division chief Jamal Md Yunos said the emergency meeting held at 11am today discussed views and opinions with regard to the national polls.

“The decision we made unanimously, by all the Umno division leaders (who attended), is that we want the general election to be held as soon as possible.

“This decision will be conveyed to the prime minister by the party’s secretary-general,” he told media at the World Trade Centre.

According to Jamal, a total of 158 division heads including Umno leaders attended the emergency meeting except for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Mahdzir Khalid, both of whom are vice-presidents of the party.

“The purpose of this meeting was also to see the preparedness of Umno’s election machinery and the requirements from all division heads to the leadership in making sure that the general election is held as soon as possible,” he said.

When asked if there was any pressure to dissolve parliament, Jamal said none was expressed, adding that it was rather a sharing of opinions.

Jamal also denied that the meeting discussed Najib Razak’s final appeal at Federal Court tomorrow.

However, The Malaysian Insight was told that the meeting will resume at 5.30pm with the presence of top leaders including Ismail and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The emergency meeting was called late last night by party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

Earlier, several party leaders who were met at the building said that they received the invitation for the emergency meeting late last night and refused to reveal the agenda.

“I don’t even know what this meeting is about. We also got an invitation late yesterday,” said Malacca chief Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Among those seen as of 12.30pm were party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, his deputy Mohamad Hasan and Najib Razak who is Pekan MP. – August 22, 2022.
