ANWAR Ibrahim will be contesting the Tambun parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election.

The opposition leader made the announcement at the Pakatan Harapan (PH) convention at the Ipoh Convention Centre tonight.

“I want Perak together (with PH). I’m delving into politics here because I don’t want to choose a safe seat.

“I’m the (opposition) leader. So, I dare to crash here (Perak) and capture the seat in GE15,” he said.

Anwar, who is also PH chairman, was Port Dickson MP prior to the dissolution of parliament on October 10.

The Election Commission today set November 19 as polling day for the 2022 general election.

Nomination day is on November 5 and early polling will be held on November 15.

Pahang, Perlis and Perak will also be holding their state polls on the same dates.

Anwar also said that he wants to boost Perak’s economy for it to be abreast with the prosperity enjoyed by PH-led states such as Selangor, Penang and Negri Sembilan.

The PKR president, however, admitted that the decision to contest in Perak does not promise an easy path for him.

“I admit it’s difficult, it’s not an easy area for us, but I came with the confidence of seizing Tambun and Perak, even though I know there are prominent figures here.

“Give PH a mandate and we will raise Perak as a new economic giant and the state should rise together with Negri Sembilan, Penang and Selangor as economic giants.”

Tambun is a parliamentary seat previously held by Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

The caretaker youth and sports minister defeated three-term incumbent Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah in the 2018 general election. Husni was a Barisan Nasional minister at the time.

Anwar previously won the Port Dickson seat in a by-election on October 13, 2018 with a majority of over 31,016 votes, after the incumbent Danyal Balagopal Abdullah vacated his seat for the opposition leader. – October 20, 2022.
