HAVING come under flak, Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar today apologised for not being in the state during the massive flood that hit this week.

He admitted that no excuses can justify his absence, nor fix the current situation.

“However, I just want to put it on record that I was monitoring the flood situation, and I decided to travel overseas when there were signs of the floods receding,” he said at a press conference today.

He was away in New Zealand at the height of the floods.

Samsuri said he had been monitoring the floods and had visited flood victims on December 9 and 10, and decided to go on his trip overseas when he felt that the floods were receding.

“But the flood peaked when I was overseas from December 18-21,” he added.

Executive councillor Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah subsequently confirmed that Samsuri was away but had returned to the country.

He said Samsuri was already in the country and was on his way to Kuala Terengganu.

“The MB is already in Malaysia today, he will be in Terengganu soon,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

The east coast state was hardest hit by the floods this week.

A report by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) stated that Terengganu recorded the highest number of victims at 25,895 followed by Kelantan (24,690), Sarawak (104), Selangor (57), Johor and Perak (46) and Pahang (23). – December 23, 2022.
