Pahang MB ahead in Umno veep race

PAHANG Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail is almost certain to secure the Umno vice-president’s post after getting 67 votes from 189 divisions in the party elections for the 2023-2026 session today.
As of 11pm, he was closely followed by incumbent and Johor Umno communications chairman Mohamed Khaled Nordin who obtained 64 votes.
In third place for the position is Federal Territories Umno communications chairman Johari Abdul Ghani, who got 52 votes.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said is in fourth place with 35 votes.
Former housing and local government minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican got 27 votes, followed by former Johor menteri besar Hasni Mohammad (18) and Mahdzir Khalid (13).
Another candidate for the post, Mohd Yusof Musa, has yet to receive any votes.
Positions for the Supreme Council also drew attention when Shamsul Anuar Nasarah led with 63 votes, followed by Zambry Abdul Kadir and Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, each with 60 votes.
Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub got 59 votes, followed by Bung Mokhtar Radin (58), Ahmad Maslan (56), Abdul Azeez Rahim and Azlan Osman (52 each).
Also seen trying to grab a position in the 25-member council were Shanizam Shamsuddin, who obtained 46 votes, and Zahida Zarik Khan (35).
The vote counting is currently underway with full results expected soon.
Umno elections were held starting February 1 with the annual branch conference and branch committee elections, women’s, youth and branch women’s wings.
They were followed by the women’s, youth and women’s division representative and election committee meetings, together with the election of the women’s exco, youth exco and central Umno women’s movement exco, held simultaneously across the country on March 11. – March 18, 2023.
