DR Mahathir Mohamad has sent a letter of demand to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to retract his statements made at the recent PKR congress, which implied the former prime minister was corrupt and a “scoundrel”.

The former Langkawi lawmaker said although Anwar did not name him in his speech, media reports that came out following the speech named Dr Mahathir as the person who squandered the nation’s coffers, did not pay taxes and enriched his children.

“Although Anwar did not name me, media reports did.

“I was the prime minister for 22 years and later 22 months. This was mentioned in Anwar’s speech.

“I have given him seven days to back up his claims with proof or to retract his statements.

“If he doesn’t, I will take whatever action necessary under the country’s existing laws,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said Anwar’s statements were slanderous and painted him in a very bad light.

“That’s why in the letter of demand, I told him to withdraw his statement or show proof of what he said,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said Anwar used to say various things, but his statement this time cannot be taken lightly because the PKR president is now prime minister.

“As prime minister, he has a responsibility… he cannot just make accusations without clear evidence,” Dr Mahathir said.

In his speech on March 18, Anwar said, among other things: “There were people who were in power for 22 years plus 22 months and now the Malays are complaining about losing everything, losing property and losing shares.

“How, not to lose (everything), when you take it all. For your family and children.”

Dr Mahathir said he has tried to correct the plight of Malays before, including during his second time in office.

But, he said, his government was overthrown and he lost his position, and now he continues his struggle. – March 28, 2023.
