THE current unity government can stay relevant and be in power beyond the 16th general election if the parties commit to working together, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said.

“If the current cooperation model today could be continued and strengthened, then of course it will open a new future for national politics,” the Seremban lawmaker said.

“If we can strengthen this cooperation, and if all the parties that form the unity government today are sincere and are fully committed to this government, then of course this (administration) will remain beyond GE16,” the transport minister told reporters following the inaugural National Unity Government Convention.

Loke concurred with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who said the current administration will remain in power beyond the next polls should the parties in the unity government continue to support the leadership of Anwar Ibrahim.

Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno president, said he was confident the unity government would be given the mandate to serve another term if it implemented good policies for the benefit of the people and the country.

Loke said the convention today was a historical meeting, showing a new level of commitment to stabilise Malaysian politics.

“All the leaders have expressed their commitment for the prosperity of the country,” he said.

Loke also said party grassroots would be able to accept the reason for the formation of the unity government, should respective party leaders give a clear vision.

He said the unity government cooperation is just not only for the sake of state elections.

The convention, themed “Madani – Mewajahi Masa Depan Malaysia (Madani – Envisaging Malaysia’s Future)” is part of the government’s drive to foster unity among former rival parties ahead of the six state elections. – May 14, 2023.
