THE Kuala Terengganu High Court today upheld PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s victory for the Marang parliamentary seat in the general election (GE).

Judge Hassan Abdul Ghani dismissed Barisan Nasional (BN)/Umno’s election petition challenging the validity of Hadi’s position as lawmaker for the constituency.

Hassan said the Marang seat belongs to PAS.

“The court rejects the petition filed by Umno with costs of RM50,000.

“The court found the evidence presented by the plaintiff failed to raise any reasonable doubt,” Hassan said.

The petition was filed by BN candidate Jasmira Othman, who lost to Hadi in the GE.

On January 3, Terengganu Umno filed a petition to annul last GE’s results for the Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Kemaman parliamentary seats under the Election Offences Act 1954.

Umno alleged there was clear evidence from witnesses who claimed to have received money from PAS, which was “fishing” for votes.

In the GE, Hadi won with a large majority of 41,279 votes. He has been Marang MP since 1990.

Hadi has lost the seat only once – to an Umno candidate in the 2004 GE. – June 27, 2023
