THE Election Court in Terengganu has nullified Perikatan Nasional’s Che Alias Hamid’s Kemaman parliamentary seat victory in last year’s general election.
Judge Anselm Charles Fernandis accepted the petitioner’s – Terengganu Barisan Nasional – allegations regarding the existence of bribery in the state government’s programme to get votes during the election campaign.
“The court ordered a cost of RM30,000 to be paid by the respondent to the petitioner,” the judge said when reading the decision at the Election Court in Kuala Terengganu today.
In the general election, Che Alias, from PAS, won the seat with a 27,179-vote majority after polling 65,714 votes.
The Barisan Nasional candidate, Ahmad Said, who is a former Terengganu mentri besar, polled 38,535 votes while PKR’s Hasuni Sudin picked up 8,340 votes.
The fourth candidate on the ballot, Rosli Ab Ghani, of Pejuang, lost his deposit after polling 506 votes.
The petition was filed by Ahmad, who is also Terengganu Umno chief, on January 3.
Ahmad said there were elements of corruption in some official events of the Terengganu government through the i-Youth and i-Siswa aid funds, which had been distributed during the campaigning period to attract votes for Che Alias.
Last June, the Election Court in Kuala Terengganu also nullified PAS’ Ahmad Amzad Hashim win in Kuala Terengganu in the general election. – September 26, 2023.
