THE PKR volunteer who helped to verify an address related to the Godfrey Group Limited, the company linked to a US lobbying firm allegedly hired by the Malaysian government, is being investigated for theft, Johor police CID chief Assistant Commissioner Kamarulzaman Mamat said today.
He said Gerald Tang is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for allegedly stealing a document, but refused to describe the nature of the said document.
“We are investigating,” he said in a telephone interview with The Malaysian Insight.
Tang, who was detained yesterday, was brought to the Johor magistrate’s court at 3.30pm today and remanded until June 13.
Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli yesterday said Tang was asked to verify the existence of a Florence Goh at an address in Johor Baru.
“Gerald Tang went during his free time and verified that Florence Goh (who leads NGO Care United JB) exists and that Godfrey’s letters were sent to that address.
“Tang, accompanied by Bukit Batu assemblyman Jimmy Puah, went to the Seri Alam police station to give his statement. But he has now been detained,” Rafizi said in a statement yesterday.
Rafizi said the police action arose from a report made by Florence Goh.
The PKR vice-president had alleged that the government had hired Washington-based firm The 45 Group to lobby the US government on Malaysia’s behalf. – June 11, 2017.
