New govt swamped with applications from youths, says Hannah Yeoh

THE Pakatan Harapan government has been receiving applications from youths and professionals eager to help “rebuild” the country, said lawmakers.
“I have received a lot of emails from young people. It wasn’t like this in the last two elections,” said Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, who first contested in 2008.
“A lot of emails. It’s not just me. A lot of MPs have received them, everywhere,” she said at a joint thanksgiving function organised by voters in Segambut, Kepong, and Batu at the How Lim Kong Temple in Kuala Lumpur today.
All three seats were won by PH, which took over the federal government in GE14.
Yeoh, the former Selangor Speaker, said the high number of applications from the youths indicated a “very healthy trend”.
“A lot of young people emailed us their resumes and said, ‘We want to enter public service and work for the government’.
“They feel they want to do public service and serve the nation. I think it’s a very, very healthy development for the next generation of Malaysians.”
Yeoh said it was a departure from the apathy normally associated with younger voters. “Before this, nobody wanted to work for the government because they felt they had no chance for promotions. If you’re good, you might be suppressed. But now they have a totally different view of the government.”
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, who was also present, said that he had also received “a lot of” resumes and recommendations from professionals.
“They are successful professionals. They are willing to work for this government, free of charge, because they want to be part of the rebuilding process.”
“They want to be part of history in the making. Never in their lives did they imagine that this change of government could happen.”
Yeoh added that job offers will depend on “availability”.
“We’ll look into vacancies and suitability. What is encouraging is that people want to apply to work for the government.” – May 27, 2018.
