Five charged with murder, one abetment in death of Navy cadet

FIVE cadets of Universiti Pertahanan Malaysia were charged with the murder of fellow cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain at the Jalan Duta Court in Kuala Lumpur today.
Another cadet was charged with abetting in the crime where Zulfarhan was tortured to death for allegedly stealing a laptop.
The parents of the six accused were among those present at the packed courtroom this afternoon.
Magistrate Siti Radziah Kamaruddin set August 14 for mention.
The five charged with murder were Muhammad Akmal Zuhairi Azmal, Azamuddin Md Sofi, Muhammad Najib Mohd Rozi, Muhammad Afif Najmudin Azahat and Mohamad Shobirin Sabri, all aged 21.
They were charged with committing the offence at Room 04-10 of the Jebat dorm at the Sungai Besi National Camp between 4.45am and 5.45am on May 22.
Their fellow cadet Abdoul Hakeem Mohd Ali, also 21, was charged with abetment.
The six were also charged with voluntarily causing hurt to extort a confession under Section 330 of the Penal code along with 13 others.
All of them were accused of committing the offence on May 21 and 22 at a room of the Jebat dorm.
Magistrate Siti Radziah set July 18 for case mention and set set bail RM7,000 bail with one surety for each accused.
Meanwhile, 13 others who were still in police custody was released today on court bond.
The accused and the suspects whose remand order ended today were among the 36 picked up by police to facilitate investigations into Zulfarhan’s murder.
Four were released last week after their remand ended while 32 others had their remand order extended for another five days to facilitate investigation.
Zulfarhan was tortured to death after he was accused of stealing a laptop. He died on June 1 from second and third degree burns that covered 80% of his body, allegedly inflicted by an iron steamer. – June 14, 2017.
