UMNO has stopped monthly allocations to all its divisions and wings, starting this month, party secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said in a circular dated May 22, 2018.

The notice, sighted by The Malaysian Insight and confirmed by two division chiefs in Selangor and the Federal Territories, comes after Barisan Nasional’s defeat in the May 9 polls and consequent loss of power

“Be informed that the party headquarters after studying the party’s financial position, has decided to cut all monthly funding for the divisions and wings effective May 2018.

“Nevertheless, it is hoped that the divisions and wing movements in each division will continue operations as usual,” Tengku Adnan wrote in the circular.

Two division chiefs in Federal Territories and Selangor confirmed receiving the circular.

“We respect the decision. We understand that Umno is trying to save money. We are ready to become the opposition,” said one division chief, who asked for anonymity.

Umno grassroots leaders in Perak, however, said they have not received the notice.

“I’ve not been informed of anything. Perhaps we will be informed this Sunday during a meeting,” said a division chief in northern Perak who also did not want to be named.

The Malaysian Insight is trying to reach Tengku Adnan for comment. – May 31, 2018.
