JOHARI Abdul Ghani has joined Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s team, gunning for the post of Umno vice-president in the June 30 party polls.

Former deputy prime minister Zahid is contesting the president’s post, while former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan is aiming for the post of deputy president.

“I wish to announce my candidacy for the post of Umno vice-president in the upcoming party elections,” Johari told The Malaysian Insight.

“Mohamad and I will be at the Umno office at 11am today to submit our forms.”

The Supreme Council member and former second finance minister said Umno must champion the people’s issues, and no longer think that Malaysians feel indebted to the Malay party and the Barisan Nasional coalition.

“It is time for us, as members of Umno, to re-evaluate ourselves and do all that is necessary to correct past mistakes and improve where we are lacking.

“We, as a party and individual members, need to put our ears to the ground… instead of glorifying the accolades of the past.”

He said the BN lynchpin party has a huge challenge in attracting youth.

“We need our party to appeal to the youth, and become their voice and inspiration. This is among the challenges and issues facing Umno.

“It has now become more critical than ever for the party to find its place in this new Malaysia, and ensure that it remains relevant in the country’s journey towards economic development and being a progressive nation.”

The former Titiwangsa MP, who has 25 years’ experience in the corporate world, said he wants to continue his involvement in politics to serve the people.

“I have worked with people from different backgrounds and with different outlooks, both in politics and the economy.

“Just like Umno, I am not ready to quietly fade into the background, and I wish to continue to contribute to the party, bringing with me my experience and background as a loyal and long-serving member.” – June 4, 2018.
