VETERAN DAP parliamentarian Fong Kui Lun said the support letter he issued for a Bersatu Youth leader’s bid to secure Ramadan bazaar lots had been misused by certain parties.

Fong, who has been Bukit Bintang MP since 1999, said he doesn’t know who are the parties collecting extra fees for the plots.

“I would think so (my support letter has been misused) because according what I know, I called this Noorhisyam, he didn’t receive a single sen from these hawkers,” he said to reporters in front of Dang Wangi Police station.

It was reported that Bukit Bintang Bersatu Youth chief Mohd Noorhisyam Abd Karim is alleged to have tried to make money off traders seeking lots at a Ramadan bazaar by charging them up RM5,000 for lots in Jalan Masjid India the middle of Kuala Lumpur.

Fong had issued a support letter, which Noorhisyam showed to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) after it initially refused his request for 80 lots.
“In the last 20-30 years, some people have been controlling (these bazaars). I don’t know (who are they).”

When asked whether this would deter him from issuing support letters in the future, Fong said no.

“I think support letters are a small matter. In 20 over years as an MP, I have issued thousands of these letters.

“If it is a genuine case, I think we should give (support letters),” he said.

Fong then criticised DBKL for allowing third parties to represent the petty traders or hawkers seeking licences.

“They should give the license direct to the people,” Fong said. – June 20, 2018.
