POLICE may dissolve three special units in the next few weeks, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.

“I have received a briefing on suggestions to improve and restructure agencies under PDRM.

“(Hopefully) the restructuring will restore public confidence in the police, as an organisation with nobility, dignity, and integrity.

“It has been suggested that a few task forces should be dissolved. I will announce when it is finalised, in a week or two,” he said during a Hari Raya open house at the police national headquarters in Bukit Aman.

Muhyiddin said there was still plenty of room for improvement in the police force’s operations to raise its public image.

Inspector-General of Police Fuzi Harun confirmed with reporters later that the three units likely to be shut down are the Special Task Force for Anti-Vice, Gaming and Gangsterism (STAGG), Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) and Special Task Force on Organised Crime (Stafoc).

“I think the initial stage will involve STAGG, STING, and Stafoc. Later, we will submit (more suggestions) to the home minister,” said Fuzi.

He did not elaborate on the reasons to disband the three special units and what would happen to the police officers in the three units.

He was also asked about ongoing investigations on state investor 1MDB, but declined to elaborate.

“You have been writing enough about it. When we conclude investigations, we will submit the papers to the DPP (deputy public prosecutors),” said Fuzi. – June 26, 2018.
