NO one from Umno has come forward to claim the money seized in raids by the police on premises linked to Najib Razak in connection with 1Malaysia Development Bhd investigations, police said today.

Not even Najib, the former party president, had claimed the money as Umno’s, said Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Amar Singh Ishar Singh.

“We won’t know. The word ‘Umno’ wasn’t printed on the money.

“But if they claim it’s Umno money, then we have to record a statement from them,” he said at a press conference today where he revealed that RM1.1 billion worth of jewellery, cash and other luxury items had been seized in the raids.

The cash amount was RM116.7 million in 26 currencies.

Umno’s strategic communications unit had said on May 24 that the party needed the funds to rebuild itself after losing the 14th general election.

“Umno is seeking to recover these funds and we request police to release and return them to the party after investigations are completed.

“Umno is in the process of rebuilding and the return of our party funds will help in this process,” it said in a statement.

Another Umno leader who said the funds belonged to the party was former Johor Baru MP Shahrir Samad.

At that time, police had only counted up to RM114 million of the cash seized.

The strategic communications unit said the party’s constitution allowed for the president to source and manage funds, including those to be used for a general election. – June 27, 2018.
