DR Mahathir Mohamad should prove that the Malaysian government is preventing students overseas from meeting opposition leaders, the chairman of the Overseas Umno Club Alumni Association said.
Wan Md Hazlin Agyl Wan Hassan dismissed the former prime minister’s claim that Malaysian students on scholarships abroad would have their bursaries withdrawn as ‘rhetoric’.
“If you look at the scholarships’ terms and conditions, none state that scholarships will be pulled back if they meet opposition leaders abroad.
“If he does not have concrete evidence, I suggest the issue should not be blown out of proportion,” Wan Md Hazlin Agyl said at a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre, today.
He was responding to Dr Mahathir’s recent blog post where the Parti Bersatu Pribumi Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman said Malaysian students in London had been warned not to attend the same function as him to celebrate Hari Raya recently.
Wan Md Hazlin Agyl said students overseas had been allowed to meet leaders from both ruling and opposing parties during his time abroad as a student.
“We wanted to meet opposition leaders as well, to evaluate their qualities as leaders,” he said.
If such restrictions were true, he said he would not support them as students should have an open mindset.
The 92-year-old Dr Mahathir has been having regular ceramahs with Malaysians nationwide, urging voters to reject the “corrupt Najib administration” in the 14th general election. – July 3, 2017.
