KHAIRY Jamaluddin said he would leave it to Barisan Nasional lawmakers to decide who should be the opposition leader in Parliament.
The former youth and sports minister has been touted by Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki to take the job.
“The position of opposition leader must be decided by the opposition parliamentarians. The opposition lawmakers have still not met yet.
“I actually have decided I do not want any positions for now. But, it is up to the opposition MPs,” Khairy said during a handover ceremony to Pakatan Harapan minister Syed Saddiq Syed Rahman today.
The Rembau MP added he was more comfortable not being tied down to any Umno post as he was free to critique the party as it sought to reform itself.
““I want to take a short break and make sure I can speak up freely and ensure my party can reform. If we hold a position, it will be a bit difficult,” Khairy said.
There have been calls for Khairy to be opposition leader after he lost in the Umno presidential race to Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid, who was former deputy prime minister offered Khairy the Umno secretary-general position but was turned down. – July 3, 2018.
