Madrasah says case closed as Thaqif did not die of abuse

MADRASAH Tahfiz Al-Jauhar, where Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gadaffi died in April, today expressed relief over a second post-mortem result which showed the 11-year-old died of leptospirosis.
Its principal, Mohammad Afdhaluddin Ismail, said the results proved that no abuse had taken place in the religious school in Kota Tinggi, Johor, adding that he considers the case closed.
“As we have explained previously, based on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings, the school is monitored at all times.
“However, we are relieved and will learn (from the incident) in improving the standard operating procedure and streamlining the existing system,” he said in a statement today.
Thaqif’s case received wide media coverage as the first post-mortem revealed signs of abuse.
A 29-year-old assistant warden in the school was arrested to facilitate investigations as reports emerged that he had beaten Thaqif with a rubber hose.
The assistant warden, who had a previous conviction for robbery, was released on a RM20,000 court bond.
“We at MTAJ express our gratitude to Allah as this case can be considered as closed following the medical report.”
On May 18, Thaqif’s body was exhumed as pathologists wanted more tissue samples for the second post-mortem.
Thaqif, who had both legs amputated because of bacterial infection, died on April 26. – July 11, 2017.
