SELANGOR PKR has nominated its deputy Youth chief Radzlan Jalaludin as the Sg Kandis by-election candidate.
A source said the state leadership reached the decision by consensus to forward Radzlan’s name to the central committee.
“We have sent the name but we have not had a response because the president is in Turkey,” said the source, who asked to remain anonymous.
“But the state leadership has chosen and the top leadership has to accept it.”
Party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is in Turkey with her husband, de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is there for surgery to treat back and shoulder injuries.
The source said the state party leadership nominated Razlan as the Kota Damansara candidate this year and in 2013, but the central leadership rejected him both times.
“If he is not picked, it will be the third time he is rejected as a candidate.”
The 38-year-old Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) law graduate became the Kota Damansara party coordinator in 2013 and is an active member of the Youth wing.
The source said Radzlan had all the qualities that PKR wanted in a candidate.
“We want to find a young candidate who has legal knowledge and is an activist who can contribute to society – Radzlan fits the bill,” he said.
On his part, Radzlan said the party leadership had not told him anything about contesting in a by-election.
“The media has been my only source of information. So far none of the top leadership has told me anything officially. But if they do, I am willing enough to take on the responsibility,” he said.
Two others names that have cropped up as possible candidates are former Kota Anggerik assemblyman Yaakob Sapari and PKR religious bureau chief Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, who is also secretary to Selangor education exco Dr Shahruddin Badaruddin.
Selangor PKR chief Azmin Ali had confirmed that three had made the shortlist to contest the state seat vacated by their late party colleague Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, who died of lymphoma on July 2.
Polling day is August 4. – July 13, 2018.
