MALAYSIANS must stay united as the country’s leadership embarks on the rocky road to reform, said Malaysian-American economist Prof Woo Wing Thye.

“We should be very proud that we saw the unity of Malaysians on May 9.

“We now have a political leadership that has the will to change existing distribution of benefits and entrenched interests.

“If Malaysia does well economically, is respected in the region, we can mobilise the region,” said the academic from the University of California, Davis during a public lecture on the China-US trade war, this afternoon, in Kuala Lumpur.

He was answering a question from one of the audience on how Malaysia could stay neutral and avoid becoming a proxy of one of the two superpowers in the long run.

“Internal divisions (within the country) have to be minimised. When we are divided internally, we become natural proxies.

“I truly believe that if the positive trends that have appeared (since May 9) continue to grow, the chances of us being used (as a proxy) is reduced,” said Woo. – July 13, 2018.
