Dr Mahathir-Anwar team-up offers easy target for attack, says Khairy

THE new relationship between former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has given Barisan Nasional and Umno an easy target for attack, says Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said both had played up to Malay sentiments and split the support for Umno when they fought in 1997.
And now, as the Malays are still grappling with the after effects of the break-up between the two leaders, the two have both decided to kiss and make up to fight the government, he said.
Anwar was deputy prime minister to Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who sacked and then had him jailed for sodomy and corruption
“When asked the reason for his sacking of Anwar at the time, Dr Mahathir told us it was because Anwar was morally unfit to lead,” said Khairy in his speech at the Umno Bagan division meeting this evening.
But now the two are working together to take down Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Khairy said it is easier to counter attack the opposition now that the two of them have struck up an alliance.
“We can counter many of the things that they have brought up. If they bring up the DoJ (US Department of Justice) suit, we can bring up what they did when they were in power and leading the country,” said Khairy.
However, the people are fed up of the same old fight and were only interested in what the government had planned for the future, he said.
He said the choice is clearly Barisan Nasional-Umno if the people had to pick which coalition to support.
“The opposition can’t even tell us who they will appoint to be prime minister if they win the general election. But I have been told that it will depend on which party holds the most seats in Parliament” said Khairy.
If that were so, then the party would be DAP, he said.
Based on that, it would be DAP, he said.
“Among the opposition parties, DAP holds the most seats in Parliament. I know because I’m in Parliament. But knowing the political landscape, DAP will not name the prime minister. But it shows who has the real power if the opposition wins the general election,” said Khairy. – July 23, 2017.
