ANWAR Ibrahim has warned party members holding powerful government posts not to abuse their positions to try to win votes in the ongoing PKR elections.

The incoming party president said ministers, menteris besar and excos should not use their positions to threaten or woo any party members to up their chances of nailing party positions.

“As long as I’m given the mandate to lead, I will not compromise. This party was set up to oppose corruption, wastage, abuse of power and arrogance of power,” he said in a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.

Anwar won the PKR president’s post uncontested on Sunday.

A fierce contest for the deputy president post is expected between incumbent Azmin Ali, who is economic affairs minister, and outgoing PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli.

Some 12 contenders are vying for four vice-presidential posts, including ministers Xavier Jayakumar, Zuraida Kamaruddin and deputy minister Shamsul Iskandar Akin.

Anwar said outgoing PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also his wife, would carry on her party duties until the PKR national congress in November.

Wan Azizah, who was also at the press conference, urged party members to refrain from personal attacks and mudslinging in the party polls.

As the largest party in the ruling coalition, she said its members must set an example to show that PKR was a principled party. – August 9, 2018.
