THE Housing and Local Government Ministry is looking at turning the site of the abandoned Highland Towers into a park, said minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

“I was told that the Highland Towers site is not suitable for buildings or houses, so one idea is to turn it into a park or recreational space,” she said, after the launch of Girl2Leader Malaysia, today.
.
“I will ensure the ministry approves the plan if that is what the Highland Towers redevelopment committee wishes.

“A park would be beneficial to the people, particularly those in my constituency.”

The minister is the Ampang MP.

She said the committee had met five times and it had identified the owners of units at the site.

Highland Towers and its surrounding area was abandoned after one of its three blocks of condominium units collapsed on December 11, 1993, in a landslide that claimed 48 lives.

Last week the ministry was reported to have plans to develop affordable housing at the site. – August 19, 2018.
