THE government has not decided on the move to implement the gateless gantry toll system via radio frequency identification (RFID) lines at all major highways, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

“No decision has been made regarding RFID. Once we have made a decision, we will begin,” he said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Touch ‘n Go Sdn Bhd recently announced that it will begin testing the RFID system from September 3, ahead of its full implementation from January next year.

The pilot test project will be conducted at highways in the Klang Valley involving Class 1 vehicles, which include passenger cars, vans, pickups, and four-wheel drive vehicles with private registrations.

According to Touch ‘n Go, 16 highways have been fitted with the RFID system, which involves the use of a RFID chip embedded in a sticker attached to a vehicle and connected with the Touch ‘n Go Wallet application.

Touch ‘n Go also recently announced it would not be selling SmartTag readers from August 8. However, Touch ‘n Go cards as well as MyKads can still be used to pay toll charges.

In its 14th general election manifesto, Pakatan Harapan pledged to remove all tolls in stages.

Last week, Works Minister Baru Bian said it would be difficult for the government to remove all tolls, considering the government’s financial state.

He said the abolishing of tolls would involve a cost of up to RM400 billion. – August 20, 2018.
