MALAYSIANS must give the authorities time to properly investigate corrupt figures before pressing charges so as not to be caught flat-footed in court, said Daim Zainuddin
The Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairman said Putrajaya must gather solid evidence before prosecution to prevent waste of public funds.
“We are all impatient but we need proof. It will be very bad for the government if its prosecutes and loses.
“If you want to prosecute, we must ensure 90% (chance of winning) otherwise, do not waste public funds,” he said in a press conference at Ilham Tower today.
The former finance minister said the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) and police were moving in on certain individuals, including former prime minister Najib Razak.
“I think the present priority is to make sure certain individuals are (identified) for investigations. So far we have got the former PM,” Daim said.
He said more would be called up for their statements or charged in due time.
“Soon there may be a few more. (But first) We need to take statements from witnesses…”
Najib has been charged with laundering money from SRC International, a former 1MDB unit. The disgraced former Umno leader is also accused of criminal breach of trust and power abuse. All charges are linked to SRC International. – August 20, 2018.
