KAPAR MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid was right to apologise to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamaruddin, who hoped such a mistake would not be repeated.

Sani, who is campaigning for Rafizi Ramli who is making a bid for the party deputy presidency, had accused Dr Mahathir and Council of Eminent Persons chairman Daim Zainuddin of plotting to prevent Anwar Ibrahim from becoming the next prime minister.

He had claimed that Dr Mahathir and Daim preferred to have incumbent PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, who is Economic Affairs Minister and Rafizi’s rival, succeed the current prime minister.

“I congratulate Sani on calling a press conference to apologise. I hope he doesn’t do it again,”  Zuraida said at a Jalur Gemilang campaign in her constituency, Ampang, in Kuala Lumpur, today.

Sani tendered his apology to Dr Mahathir today after what he was told off by PKR president-elect Anwar, who denied there was such a plot against him.

Anwar said the claims were baseless and told Sani to correct his statement.

Sani told reporters earlier today that he had sent a letter of apology to Dr Mahathir’s office in Putrajaya.

On whether Sani should also apologise to Azmin, Zuraida said that was up to the PKR disciplinary committee to decide.

“I don’t know how the committee sees it. If it is necessary, then it should be done”

Pro-Rafizi campaigners had said that Azmin was “close” to Dr Mahathir, whom Azmin had known since his university days. Azmin had also worked with Dr Mahathir when he was Anwar’s special officer while Anwar was the education minister.

The narrative was repeated in Rafizi’s campaigns in Johor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan. – August 21, 2018.
