JAILED opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has yet to receive any notice to attend the Royal Commission Inquiry into Bank Negara’s foreign exchange losses, which begins tomorrow.
His lawyer, R. Sivarasa, said they only knew about the hearing today.
“It was such a short notice. Announcement on the 4th and first hearing on the 8th,” Sivarasa said.
He said this at the Kuala Lumpur High Court where he is representing Anwar in a RM100 million defamation suit case against Sports and Youth Minister Khairy Jamaluddin over his “main belakang” remark at a ceramah in Lembah Pantai on February 19, 2008.
Sivarasa is also be representing Anwar at the RCI.
Anwar was deputy prime minister and finance minister when Bank Negara Malaysia allegedly suffered billions of ringgit of losses in the early 1990s.
Anwar previously said he would co-operate with the task force if required.
The task force was formed in February after former Bank Negara assistant governor Abdul Murad Khalid claimed in an interview that the central bank racked up US$10 billion in foreign exchange losses during the early 1990s when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister.
Dr Mahathir is now chairman of the opposition party Bersatu.
The task force is headed by the former chief secretary to the government Mohd Sidek Hassan. – August 7, 2017.
