Tagal is a traditional Kadazan Dusun practice that preserves the river ecosystem. In local dialect Tagal means “no fishing”, and is a custom that has been passed down through generations.
Those who practise Tagal only fish during a prescribed period each year, leaving the river untouched otherwise. Scientists have described Tagal as a sustainable system ahead of its time.
